A judge has ruled that Onondaga County must pay $385,000 because a dying jail inmate's pleas were ignored by employees for 14 hours in 2009.
State Supreme Court Justice Deborah Karalunas ordered the county to pay the family of Chuniece Patterson $380,000 for the suffering she endured in her Justice Center cell, and $5000 to compensate for her wrongful death. Patterson died of a ruptured ectopic pregnancy 14 hours after she started complaining about abdominal pain.
The county had already admitted that its employees' negligence led to Patterson's death. Karalunas's ruling was strictly for the amount the county owed Patterson's mother, Chundra Patterson.
