ESPN has lost a battle to keep the wife of former SU basketball coach Bernie Fine from suing them.
A federal judge denied the sports network's request to dismiss a libel and slander lawsuit filed by Laurie Fine over their coverage of child-molesting allegations against her husband. ESPN argued that their coverage was not grossly irresponsible as the lawsuit claimed, because the information was based on official proceedings and her own words from an audio recording. US District Judge Lawrence Kahn disagreed, saying the ESPN stories described Laurie Fine's conduct in the network's own words. Therefore, he ruled the lawsuit could go forward.
