Maffei Calls for Fed. Investigation Into Prisoner Monitoring System

Washington D.C. - A local representative is using his position to gain answers about how a local man was able to escape ankle monitoring to kill a librarian and rape her 10-year-old daughter.

“It is clear that electronic monitoring devices are far from perfect, and the consequences of failure can be horrendous,” said Rep. Dan Maffei, who serves as the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Science, Subcommittee on Oversight. “We need to do whatever it takes to make sure nothing like this is ever repeated in Central New York or anywhere else across the country.”

In March, 2013 David Renz was able to disable his ankle monitor 46 times. Law enforcement never responded – which was a violation of procedure. He then sexually assaulted a 10-year-old in front of her mother, Lori Bresnahan, before he killed her.

About 100,000offenders of federal crimes are monitored by an electronic monitoring device. Maffei has written a letter to the U.S. Government Accountability Office to ask them too look into the effectiveness of federal agencies in supervising electronic monitoring devices and to find ways to improve the system.
