New Political Rumors Swirl About Mahoney

New political rumors are swirling today that Governor Cuomo may be considering a Central New York pick for Lt. Governor next year.

The magazine and website City and State is reporting that Cuomo is considering Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney as his running mate next year, should current Lt. Governor Robert Duffy bow out.

It's been reported that Duffy is anxious to leave state government for a possible job in the private sector.

The magazine reports that Mahoney's name is now on a short list for the number two spot after she crossed party lines three years ago to endorse Cuomo and was even considered for the job back then.

A Mahoney pick, observers say, would show that the governor is bi-partisan and can run with a Republican.

The magazine says the only drawback with a Mahoney pick would mean that if Cuomo runs for president in 2016, he night be forced to hand over the statehouse to a Republican.

Others reportedly on the shortlist include Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice and former Congresswoman Kathy Hochul.

Mahoney's office has not responded to the new report.
