A recent incident that took place along the Erie Canal walking trail in the Town of Lenox has prompted law enforcement officials to remind trail users of safety measures that should be put into place by anyone who uses these recreational trails. The incident, which took place earlier this month, involved a male approaching a female jogger in a threatening manner, and grabbing the jogger by her arm.
Sheriff’s Deputies, with the assistance of a City of Oneida Police Officer, took the male subject into custody a short time later and was charged with Harassment in the 2nd Degree. Due to the nature of the incident when dispatched, NYS Police as well as NYS Parks Police also responded and assisted.
Madison County Sheriff Allen Riley and City of Oneida Police Chief David Meeker noted that the County is fortunate to have many trails for residents and visitors to utilize for recreation purposes year around.
While trails have remained safe for these purposes, an incident of this natureprompts the need to remind those using the trails that safety must be a priority, regardless of the time of day they are being used.
