Syracuse Assault Victim Dies

Syracuse Police have confirmed that a 70 year old city man has now died after after a brutal beating last week.

James Gifford was rushed to Upstate Hospital after police say he was assaulted on Valley Drive by 18 year old Romeo Williams, who has along rap sheet.

Williams is accused of assaulting Gifford outside a convenience store in a totally random attack, knocking him unconscious. Police say Williams then walked into the store and witnesses say he celebrated the assault by throwing his cap in the air. He then walked outside again and continued to kick and beat the victim until several friends with him at the time pulled him away.

Williams had been charged with assault, but now a grand jury will consider homicide charges now that Gifford's has died. Williams is being held without bail.

Romeo Williams was out on bail at the time of the attack and had been charged previously with two violent felonies.
