Webster, N.Y. - Hundreds of first responders have turned out for a pre-dawn vigil marking the one-year anniversary of a shooting rampage that took the lives of two upstate New York firefighters.
Local media report that firefighters, police and emergency medical personnel joined the families of the victims at the Christmas Eve morning vigil held on the south shore of Lake Ontario in Webster, outside Rochester.
Firefighters Michael Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka were killed in an ambush by William Spengler Jr. last Dec. 24. Two other firefighters were wounded, but are back working.
About 500 people helped dedicate the memorial on Sunday behind the suburban station northeast of downtown Rochester. It includes a metal sculpture of a firefighter and a stone tablet etched with the names of four fallen West Webster firefighters.
